Underwriter Assistant Job - Williamsville, NY - Posted 9/21/10

Primary Function:

This position is responsible for providing quoting and issuance of new and renewal policies; as well as the issuance of policy changes.

The most complex aspects of this position are keeping current with the changes to state, corporate and federal regulations; as well as balancing productivity with quality. This position requires a good understanding of commercial rating, an eye for detail, and the ability to make decisions based on limited information.

Decisions:

The Underwriting Assistant will decide how to classify/rate the submission/policy based on the application and notes from the underwriter. In addition, the UA will determine appropriate forms based on company forms pull lists and UW instructions.

Decisions Deferred: Most decisions in this role are defined by either company guidelines or the underwriter’s written request. The UA seeks guidance from management when there are special or unusual circumstances involved in quoting/issuance; or when direction is needed with regards to operational or underwriting questions.

Specific Responsibilities:

? Quote and issue new submissions and renewal policies to bring in premium dollars into the organization through accurate coding, rating, and competitive pricing.
? Process policy changes according to UA authority and/or underwriting instructions.
? Complete Commercial Auto filings as required by state; manually issue ID cards as required. Resolve DMV / MVF errors and suspensions; endorse policy as necessary. Follow up on Risk Advisories. Complete Commercial Auto safer reports as requested by underwriting.
? Maintain customer satisfaction by meeting company processing standards; and minimizing errors by completing a thorough review of work processed.
? Meet productivity and quality requirements as established in department objectives.
? Participate in projects, as directed by management.

Desirable Qualifications:

Education: High school diploma or equivalent; college degree if no prior commercial rating experience.

Special Skills: Basic insurance industry knowledge, knowledge of ISO rating guidelines, computer proficiency, good communication and organizational skills, ability to adapt to change.

Work Experience: 2-3 years previous commercial rating experience preferred.

Licenses or Certification: none required.
