Universal Acceptance Corporation (UAC), an Edina, MN based finance company, provides financing support for the 3rd largest Buy Here Pay Here auto chain in the country.  Due to our rapid growth and progressive business objectives, we are currently looking for an experienced Underwriter to join our team! The Underwriter position is responsible for reviewing credit applications and making a decision on application based on guidelines and policies.

SUMMARY STATEMENT

As a member of the underwriting team you will be expected to make an informed decision on each credit application based on the information provided. Position requires excellent communication skills and a positive professional demeanor as this position requires close working relationships and cooperation with sales, sales manager, customers, collections and within the Underwriting Team. This individual must demonstrate customer focus, and in all decisions and communication, keep the customer’s best interests and the company’s service goals in mind.

Essential Functions/Major Areas of Accountability

Review applications & documentation provided for accuracy & content.
Utilize the computer tools in the system, including consumer credit bureaus and other internet sources to assist in the approval process.
Determine how much documentation the customer will need in order for them to make a credit determination.
Ability to make a decision to either approve, condition, or reject each customer. In either case, the underwriter is to provide the salespeople with enough information to help get their customer approved.
Ability to take the facts, sometimes given limited information, and decide how much of a risk factor the overall deal is and place the customer in an appropriate approval line.
Work with managers to determine the best course of action on “problem accounts”.
Have ability to be empathic, but firm in working with customers, salespeople and managers.
Verify customer employment and residence information with a phone call or appropriate documentation.
Have a clear understanding of the UAC/Car Hop program and objective of re-establishing credit.
Clear and effective verbal and written communication with internal/external customers.
Assist in training new employees or back-ups, as needed.
Display consistent calm and professional demeanor
Follow all federal and state laws.
Follow all customer privacy and safeguarding policies.

REQUIREMENTS

High school diploma or equivalent experience. A minimum of two (2) years successful underwriting experience will be required.

Computer proficiency and experience in a work setting are required.  College course work or seminars relating to customer service or people skills are a plus.

Requirements are representative of minimum levels of knowledge, skills and experience required.  To perform this job successfully, the individual must possess the abilities and aptitudes to perform each duty proficiently
