Description
Property/Casualty Underwriter

Position Summary
The Property/Casualty Underwriter for the LARM account that maintains underwriting quality, proper rating classification and targeted loss ratios of risk associated with liability, property, and workers’ compensation coverage(s) for new applications and existing pool and commercial accounts. This position also provides technical expertise to JILB and clients in these areas.

Duties and responsibilities:
Evaluates new and reinstatement applications to determine quality of risks, proper rating classification, acceptability; and determine premium or contribution level to support targeted growth goals and targeted loss ratios
Declines or modifies applications/accepts or binds risks
Determines coverage(s) to be extended and endorsements or policy forms to be used
Coordinates negotiations for reinsurance on an individual account basis
Coordinates, reviews, and takes action on loss control inspection reports as needed
Reviews payroll audits of individual pool members for accuracy and completeness
Maintains and updates underwriting guideline & policy manuals for self-insured pools
Reviews and compares pool coverage documents to standard market policies and makes recommendations for changes in wording to address emerging issues, prevents coverage gaps with the reinsurance policies and to develop new coverage(s) and products
Reviews contract wording for pool members to assess compliance with requirements for insurance coverage(s), limits, certificates of insurance, additional insured status and waivers of subrogation as well as make recommendations on hold harmless/indemnity clauses
Assists in the training and development of existing and new team members
Assists Customer Service Associates and Customer Service Representatives by means of personal consultation and written instructions in matters of procedure and underwriting judgment
Coordinates with Program Executives to develop and amend underwriting policies and practices
Performs field activities such as attendance at client board meetings, marketing/sales meetings, assisting in conducting educational clinics for pool members or agents, and making inspection tours, as needed and approved
Provides technical advice and assistance to JILB and clients regarding coverage interpretations, policy and endorsement provisions and underwriting acceptability for assigned lines of business
Fulfill other responsibilities as needed

Position requirements:

Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) from four-year college or university; or one to two years’ related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
At least 5 years of property/casualty and workers’ compensation underwriting experience, preferably with experience in both the standard market and public entity arena as well as with municipalities
Valid Texas Driver’s license with acceptable driving record
Holds an active Texas General Lines insurance license, preferred
CPCU, AU, ARM, CIC or CRM professional designations, preferred
Strong verbal and written communication skills as well as the ability to work in a team environment
Other skills needed include organizational, time management and strong analytical skills and technical knowledge of insurance coverage(s)
Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of the organization and external customers
Understanding the rating methodology of workers’ compensation, property, and liability insurance coverage(s) in Texas and Nebraska, preferred
Working knowledge of public entity self-insured pool legal structures (immunities, tort limits, etc.) and general reinsurance arrangements commonly used
Ability to read, analyze and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents; ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community; ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format; ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors
Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry; ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical solutions
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables
Proficient with Microsoft Office suite and contact management systems software/database (AMS 360, RPMS)
Ability to travel 5-10% when needed
Ability to lift up to 25 pounds
