Underwriter
Description
The HSBC Private Bank Underwriter is knowledgeable in the areas of credit and risk based products with emphasis in wealth management/private banking. The underwriter provides credit-related support to Private Banking relationship managers, and directors of credit advisory for assigned portfolio. This includes the development of appropriate recommendations for credit approval, credit analysis and completion of annual reviews in a timely manner. Must ensure compliance with documented covenants, financial reporting requirements, documentation requirements and all HBUS and GPB credit policies and FIMs.
Primary Responsibilities/Essential Functions
Effectively communicate HSBC Private Bank lending strategy and risk appetite
Operate with a sense of urgency, ability to work under tight deadlines
Establish a reputation of execution excellence. Gain confidence of credit advisory associates and managers, and relationship managers
Support the credit advisors and portfolio managers to insure that all credit facilities are consistent with HBUS, GPB credit policies and credit FIMs.
Balance objectives of risk management and the client
· Financial Statement, cash flow and Tax Return analysis ,
· Risk assessment and credit structure recommendation
· Supplements analysis with research and evaluations from a wide variety of sources to develop an assessment of client, competitor and industry risks and trends
· Monitors an assigned credit portfolio and completes annual reviews, modifications and extensions for existing loan portfolio
Complete all required CARMs and supporting documentation
Underwrite and execute both loan and derivative structures, perform high quality analysis, due diligence and credit presentations
Recommend risk ratings
Serve as secondary contact on complex borrowing relationships and primary contact for others
· Maintains a thorough understanding of the content and aggregate risks within the portfolio, trends and other KRIs.
Participate in special projects as assigned by management
Decision Making Responsibilities
Recommend changes to debt structure/risk ratings in response to changes in risk
Recommend and review documentation
Actively work to maintain and improve portfolio quality and prevent loss
Stays abreast of legal and regulatory changes, industry trends and applies as relevant
Qualifications
Knowledge and Skill Requirements
5+ years experience and proven success in area of risk and portfolio management with credit products including, but not limited to, securities based lending, both purpose and non purpose, single stock lending, hedge funds and alternative investments, commercial real estate loans, home loans including first mortgages and HELOCs, private equity capital call lines, unsecured loans, foreign exchange and derivatives
Excellent credit analytics, interpersonal, portfolio management and risk management skills
Strong relationship building skills and presence, understands importance of building credibility
Ability to meet deadlines
High quality collaboration skills in a team-oriented environment
Excellent computer skills including Microsoft Office
Possess excellent oral and written communication skills.
Completion of formal credit training preferred.
· BA Required; MBA preferred
