Position Description
Position Summary
The American General Life Companies (AGLC) Underwriting organization is responsible for underwriting new life applications with a focus on delivering a best in class customer experience. Underwriting team members provide medical and financial risk assessment on applications for individual life insurance applications.

Objective
The primary responsibility of the Underwriter is to accurately assess medical and financial risk, protecting the mortality results of the organization while also supporting sales. Underwriting team members interact frequently with our customers and therefore the role requires a customer centric attitude, excellent communication skills as well as accountability for accurate and prompt processing.

Organization Reporting & Structure
This position reports to an Underwriting Associate Director/Director located in one of our Underwriting offices - Columbus, Dallas, Houston, Kansas City, Milwaukee, Richmond or Springfield. There will be direct interaction with internal departments and agents with a focus on exceeding our customers’ expectations.

Hours of operation for the Underwriting Department vary depending on business needs. Underwriters must be dependable (on time and in attendance) in order to achieve desired results.

Performance Objectives
Below are the critical performance objectives for success in this role:
• Under moderate supervision, underwrite applications with face amounts up to $1,000,000 with the ability to evaluate and take final action in an independent manner on Preferred, Standard or Rated risk assessments
• Become familiar with and follow departmental guidelines and philosophy in relation to medical and financial underwriting topics and customer service issues
• Maintain objectivity, communicate in a professional manner and handle stressful situations
• Participate in underwriting and industry education on both a formal and individual basis
• Make real time decisions regarding life insurance applications within approval authority guidelines
• Demonstrate ability to accurately report and interpret MIB codes
• Demonstrate understanding of the reinsurance process

Position Requirements
The Ideal Candidate Should Have:
• Bachelors degree and minimum of 1 year of life underwriting experience or,
High school and 4 years of life insurance industry experience plus minimum of 1 year of life underwriting experience or, successful completion of an in-house life underwriting training program
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Exceptional skills in logic, reasoning and good judgment necessary to evaluate complex situations and determine additional information needed
• Ability to make independent decisions regarding life insurance applications within approval authority guidelines
• Must have successfully completed at least 2 LOMA exams or 1 ALU or 1 CLU, or will obtain within the first 12 months
• Active and regular participation in industry related programs - LOMA, ALU etc.
• Demonstrated record of consistent strong performance
